News 04/03/07  IRTA Test : Jerez

SFW wins the first battle of the season by smashing the Jerez record lap in the Official IRTA Test.

SFW started his attempt to win the MotoGP title in the best possible way this afternoon, taking
a crucial psychological advantage over his title rivals after taking victory in the opening 'qualifying session'  of the 2007 season, the Official IRTA Test, with a lap time of 1:34.017.
Finishing off an excellent preseason for Kawasaki, SFW refused to get carried away by the result, but was nonetheless pleased to have drawn first blood in the title chase.
Vouks had laid down the gauntlet early on by breaking first the 1:35 then the 1:34 barrier as he pushed for the top spot. After seeing SFW clock his eventual winning time Vouks completed a perfect lap at the death, beating his best times at all four timed sections of the circuit. His final fastest lap was 1:34.120, only by over one tenth of a second slower than his title rival.
Seby has constantly pushed himself to the limit, regularly clocking the highest number of laps of any participant on test days and in the special 30 minute Official Test in southern Spain the signs were there that his reward is coming. The Romanian rider was third fastest competitor on track during the qualifying simulation with a solid best lap of 1:34.194 the result of his endeavour.
Skider stepped up his game in Jerez today as he took the first serious step in the defence of the World Championship title he worked hard last year to wrestle from the grip of Dutch-Devil SFW.

SFW
Kawasaki Racing (winner, 1:34.017):
"What can i say............thank you and wd to all riders who participated.
In the long wintertesting days my team has done many laps to develop the bike and tyres and in the unofficial tests we were sometimes strugling but now we have proved that we can be fast in a single lap. i must say this track is one of my best tracks so i expect on other tracks more competition.
I'm pleased with the bikes speed but still a bit concerned about consistency and race distance speed against Honda army, there is still some work to be done in that part but i'm sure i won't be far behind from the top.
Cya in Qatar ...."

Seby
Lords Of Shadow (3rd, 1:34.194):
"I didnt practice too much for this test because i had to do some other stuff for the site but i'm happy with my lap time. From all the tracks in the championship, Jerez is my worse one, my best result in 3 years is 10th so to be only 0.1 behind the best time is very good for me and i'm satisfied.
40 guys have raced in this test which is very good, better than in the past years. hmm.gif
Also welcome back to Saber120, i think his lap time is very good considering he didnt play gp500 in the last year and a half.
See you all in Qatar!"

TT98-XL VLT Racing TT98 Design (24th, 1:37.227):
"I don't know, winter testing has helped me to get the feeling with the new Honda physics, but in a way I am dissapointed, because I know I can do better times then I have done.
Especially Jerez with it being an official event I wish I had set a better time, 1.37.2 isn't good I know I can do around 1.36.5 I am dissapointed with the result... Though one positive thing which might be negative is that I didn't fall of the bike... Maybe I didn't push hard enough... but I like the idea that I can do 2 runs without crashing my bike in the heat of the moment.
Another sorry thing is that I have to say goodbye to my Honda RC211v 04... I liked the bike and the whole package I made for it, though it is time for a change! The new bike looks hot (to me it does) and I am happy with it.
Anyway Good job to SFW! I really hope he will be champion this year as he is the only Dutchman who is performing well enough to hit podiums!"

rezist Rezist Racing Yamaha Team (27th, 1:38.267):
"Congratulations to SFW! the veteran proves he's still got it!
Me however, i think im still trying to come to terms with the physics lol
Its almost too fast sometimes, its easy to get alot of speed and out of control hehe.
Even when i am flat out though, Seby still passes me and after 2 or 3 corners he is gone. lol
Anyway, we'll work through it.....see you all in the desert."
